Usage Note

  • Potassium values are in milligrams and calculated per 100g of food weight.
  • The BANANA Equivalent of a food is its potassium content in comparison with the potassium content of an average banana, food weights being the same.
We introduce the concept of BANANA Equivalent to make potassium comparison between foods less abstract than just using potassium measurements in milligrams.
For example, the BANANA Equivalent of Sun-dried tomatoes is 9.6. This means ounce for ounce, Sun-dried tomatoes has almost 10 times the potassium of banana.
Similarly, Raw broccoli has .9 Banana Equivalent. That means, gram for gram, raw broccoli has 90% the potassium content of banana.

  • How much potassium is there in a banana?
A small 6" to 7" banana (100 grams in weight) has about 360 mg of potassium. The dietary guideline for adults is to consume approximately 4,700 mg of potassium a day.

Potassium Deficiency in American Diet

Recent national nutrition surveys show that, on average, Americans consume about 2600 mg potassium per day. This is far from the recommended goal of 4700 mg or more for potassium. In fact, a recent report found that well below 5% of the population is meeting the potassium goal.

Sodium/Potassium Ratio Linked to Cardiovascular Disease Risk

The results of the new Trials of Hypertension Prevention Follow-up Study, published in the January 12, 2009, issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed a significant increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease with higher ratios of sodium to potassium. A high sodium/potassium ratio was a stronger indicator of increased risk among the participants in the study than levels of either sodium or potassium alone.

These results support previous findings that lowering dietary sodium intake while increasing potassium intake can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

Hyperkalemia: High potassium levels

The kidneys normally remove excess potassium from the body. High potassium levels are more likely to occur when the kidneys are not working properly and are less able to get rid of potassium.

If your kidneys are not working well enough, taking extra potassium (for example from using salt substitutes that contain potassium or taking potassium supplements prescribed by your health care provider) could lead to problems.

Certain medicines may cause potassium levels to build up because of their affect on the kidneys, including water pills (diuretics) and blood pressure medicines.

Addison's disease is a disorder that causes an increase in total potassium.

Changes in your diet can help both prevent and treat high potassium levels.

Hypokalemia: Low potassium levels

Hypokalemia is a metabolic imbalance characterized by extremely low potassium levels in the blood. It is a symptom of another disease or condition, or a side effect of diuretic drugs. The body needs potassium for the contraction of muscles (including the heart), and for the functioning of many complicated proteins. The normal concentration of potassium in the body is regulated by the kidneys through the excretion of urine. When the kidneys are functioning normally, the amount of potassium in the diet is sufficient for use by the body and the excess is usually excreted through urine and sweat.
