High Protein Diet and Weight Loss

The term "high protein diet" is reserved for diets with over 50% protein. Diets with 30% or so protein are considered normal diet.

Diets high in protein and moderate in carbs are often suggested to reduce body fats because they help maintain lean tissue while burning fat for fuel. Studies have indicated that diets moderately increased in protein and modestly restricted in carbohydrate and fat, particularly saturated fat, may have beneficial effects on body weight.

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is:

  • Men: 56 grams a day
  • Women: 46 grams a day

High Protein Diet and Kidney Function

Anyone on a high-protein diet has probably been warned: You may lose weight, but you risk kidney damage. The idea is that processing large amounts of protein strains the kidneys, which filter blood and remove waste. Excess protein and amino acid intake, therefore, might lead to progressive impairment of this organ.

However, in a study published in The International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, researchers examined the kidney function of athletes over seven days as they followed high- and medium-protein diets. It was found that every marker of kidney function was within the normal range in all of the athletes who consumed large amounts of protein.

In another study, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers found that high-protein diets did not cause any problems in women with normal kidney function. But in women who had “mild renal insufficiency,” consuming large amounts of protein accelerated renal decline.

Conclusion: in healthy adults, increased protein intake does not put excess strain on the kidneys.

Top High-Protein Food Lists for Vegetarian Diet

Protein content is in grams per 100 grams of food weight.

When proteins are digested, amino acids are left. The human body needs a number of amino acids to break down food. Amino acids need to be eaten in large enough amounts for optimal health. Vegetarians are able to get enough essential amino by eating a variety of plant proteins.
